A 9th ICAAP Satellite
The Asia Pacific Coalition on Male Sexual Health (ACPOM), Naz Foundation International and Hivos together will host a innovative satellite session, “Gender variance and male-male sexualities across the global south,” in Bali on Monday, 10 August 2009 as part of the 9th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP). The session will bring together experts from Southern Hemisphere regions (Asia, Latin America, Pacific Islands, Sub-Saharan Africa) to explore similarities and contrasts as they impact the delivery of HIV services for MSM and transgenders. Focus will be on the forging and nurturing of global links and networking that will empower and strengthen the advocacy and educational efforts of participants. Hivos, NFI and ASAP are also supporting this session.
Gender-variant people, irrespective of sexual orientation, are often socially and economically marginalized, a situation that is magnified in the developing countries in regions of the Southern Hemisphere. Their societal standing as outcasts often leaves them prone to humiliation, isolation and even violence. The stigmatization and marginalization of these people, who remain largely invisible throughout the global south, make them especially prone to HIV infection as well.
Experts on HIV infection among MSM and TG communities in the Southern Hemisphere will share their latest insights into the challenges they face and the strategies they’ve implemented to achieve progress. It will empower participants with knowledge to improve their own advocacy efforts as they seek to deliver HIV services to gender variants and MSM, and to eliminate discrimination against them.
