Rapid testing to be promoted in alternative venues

The HIV/AIDS transmission in China has slowed down and the sexual remains the main way of transmission. However, the rates of HIV amongst men who have sex with men (MSM) is rising sharply, said Hao Yang, deputy director of the Ministry of Health's disease prevention and control bureau on a seminar in Tsinghua University Saturday.

According to Hao Yang, the number of people suffering from HIV/AIDS in China has increased to 740,000 by the end of 2009. And among them, 14.7 percent was infected via homosexual act.

In addition, the numbers of PHAs below 15 years old and over 50 years old are also greatly increased in recent years, Hao said.

In order to find out the people living with HIV/AIDS (PHAs) utmost, China will actively promote quick HIV test in community clinics nationwide, and Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention has started the test in some gay bars, Hao added.
