New HIV strategy in Australia not to include additional spending

ASHLEY HALL: Injecting drug users in Aboriginal communities will be among the targets of a new national HIV strategy to be launched in Sydney this morning. One of its priorities will be the distribution of sterile injecting equipment to those communities. AIDS organisations say the new strategy will reenergise the campaign to cut the number of HIV infections. Samantha Donovan reports.

SAMANTHA DONOVAN: Australia's sixth national HIV strategy has been developed by the federal, state and territory governments with input from community organisations, doctors and researchers. Don Baxter, the executive director of the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations, says its priorities are more clearly defined than previous campaigns.

DON BAXTER: It's really a document that I think can help reenergise a nationally coordinated national response. And these strategies include performance indicators, which the states and territories will meet, and that's the first time we've really had these in a national strategy.
